Hey love, grab a cuppa and settle inIve got a story for you, told straight from the heart.
Poppy, dont rush into this, think it over again, Aunt Lucy urged her niece. What if you cant manage? Look at the kids your age. Youre only just nineteen yourself. And Kyles only thirteenthats the age when boys start getting into mischief. If he starts acting up, what will you do?
Poppy replied, Aunt Lucy, I cant stand the thought of my own brother ending up in a care home. I know it wont be easy, but I wont be able to sleep if Im not sure hes okay. Is he healthy? Is he getting enough to eat? What if they mistreat him?
Just a few weeks earlier their mother had passed away. A small crowd of relatives gathered at the house: her two sistersElizabeth and Ireneher cousin Tom with his wife, and a sixteenyearold niece, Megan, who is Irenes daughter. Two of their mothers former colleagues turned up, along with her friendAunt Jen.
After the funeral only the family remained, and they had to decide what to do with the kids. For Poppy things were relatively simple. At nineteen shed just finished her second year studying Business at the University of Birmingham, held a scholarship, and knew shed have to pick up parttime work. It wouldnt be a walk in the park, but shed manage.
Kyle, however, was a different story. No one in the extended family could take him in.
Were already living on the edge, Aunt Lucy explained. My husband, our two boys and my motherinlaw all share a twobed flat. Theres no room for anyone else.
Irene added, Wed moved out, but Boris went on a binge again after being axed from his job last week. Hes gone for at least a month now. We lock ourselves away in the bedroom with our daughter at night. How could we possibly look after another child?
Their cousin Tom shrugged, Ive got my own three.
So, if the older sister couldnt secure guardianship, Kyle would be sent straight to a childrens home.
Kyle wasnt in the meeting at all; he was sitting on a swing set in the back garden, a mate named Max perched on the bench beside him. The boys were quiet.
Been talking about this long? Max asked.
Two hours already, Kyle murmured. Poppy wants to become my guardian, but her aunties keep trying to talk her out of it. They say Im a troublemaker and she cant handle me.
What do you think? Max pressed.
I dont know, Kyle admitted. I just dont want a care home. I want to stay at home, go to school, play football.
Aunties, desperate to dissuade Poppy, launched their final arguments.
Poppy, youre still young. You need to think about your own futurebuilding a family, having children. Kyle will be like a weight around your neck. What man would want a girl with that kind of baggage? Irene said. Dont be naive; get him placed in a childrens home. You can visit, maybe even take him back for holidays. Were looking out for you. Hell ruin your life.
Seeing Poppys resolve, Aunt Lucy suggested, Sell that old bike, buy something more modest for you and Kyle, and live on the difference while you finish your studies.
As evening fell, everyone drifted off. Poppy called Kyle back inside.
Come on, have a proper bitestop nibbling all day.
Kyle ate, and Poppy sat across from him, just as their mother used to.
So, Kyle, well manage, right? she asked.
He gave a silent nod, eyes never leaving his plate.
The next morning Poppy started hunting for work. With a secondyear business degree under her belt, she shot out resumes for manager and accounting assistant rolesbut heard nothing back. She lowered her expectations, applied for sales assistant jobs, and landed two interviews. One place seemed promising until they learned she planned to continue her studies parttime; they pulled the offer, saying, Youll need two weeks off each term for examswhos going to work then?
Poppy was gutted. The only opening left was a cashier slot at the supermarket next door. Their neighbour, Mrs. Patel, worked there and swore the manager would take her on because they were shortstaffed.
On her way home, Poppy ran into her old maths teacher, Mrs. Olga Sinclair, who now supervised Kyle at school.
Mrs. Sinclair was aware of the familys plight and offered to help with the guardianship paperwork, providing the necessary references. She also tipped Poppy about a temporary vacancy:
The secretarys going on maternity leave. Its not a permanent post, but while shes out for three years you could fill in. The pay isnt stellarabout £9 an hourbut its right by the house and youll have Kyle in sight all the time.
Poppy took the job, switched to parttime studies, and, though the wages were modest, the extra income plus Kyles child benefit and her guardianship allowance kept them from falling into poverty.
Kyle was just a typical teenager, so there were spats and misunderstandings. He sometimes felt Poppy was overcontrolling; she feared she couldnt raise him properly and that he might fall in with the wrong crowd.
Overall, though, they settled into a decent routine. Poppy cooked and did the laundry; Kyle tidied the flat, took out the rubbish, washed his dishes, and could pop to the local shop without any drama.
One snag turned out to be true, though: Vadim, Poppys boyfriend of almost a year, wasnt thrilled about her new responsibilities.
I dont get why youve taken this on, he complained. I wanted us to have a normal lifestudying, hanging out. Last weekend we were supposed to go away together, and you bailed because you had to look after Kyle. I ended up going alone, feeling like an idiot. Then Less birthday came around and you turned him down again. It just isnt working for me.
Poppy broke things off with Vadim, initially hurt but eventually relieved to think, What a selfish bloke.
She didnt stay lonely for long, though. Kyles presence turned out to be a blessing in disguise. He kept training at the local football academy, and at fourteen the coach promoted him to the senior squad. He started playing in both practice matches and away games.
One Saturday they faced a team from a neighbouring town. Poppy turned up to cheer him on. Kyle scored one of three winning goals, but near the end of the match he twisted his ankle badly.
The team medic gave him first aid, and the assistant coach, Ian, offered to drive both Poppy and Kyle home.
Never thought Kyle had such a young mum, Ian chuckled.
Not mumsister, Kyle corrected.
The following day Ian called Poppy just to check how Kyle was feeling, then rang again to invite her for coffee, eventually asking her out on a proper date.
A year later they celebrated two big milestones: Poppy and Ians wedding and Kyles acceptance into the elite sports college that feeds the Olympic reserve.
So thats the ordinary yet bittersweet slice of life weve been talking aboutfull of worries, hard choices, and a few bright spots. Talk soon!
