“I’ll Give You Ten Grand If You Unlock It”

Ill give you ten thousand pounds if you open it,

Ill give you ten thousand pounds if you open it, he said with a sly smile. The guests erupted in laughter. Phones were raised at once. The boyeight years old, dressed in a brown tweed jacket, oddly composedremained silent. He simply strode to the safe. The laughter died down. The camera zoomed in as he placed his small hands on the cold brass metal almost as if hed touched it before. He pressed his ear to the lock and listened, then glanced over his shoulder at the wealthy man. Are you certain? murmurs rippled through the guests. The wealthy man gave a short laugh. Go on. Open it. The boy grabbed the handle and turned it steadily. CLICK. The room went silent. The mans smile dropped. He took a step closer. Who taught you that? The boy kept turning. Another heavy mechanical sound echoed inside. Without any emotion, he replied, My father designed this safe. A wave of shock swept over the hall. Every breath seemed to halt. The rich man lunged forward, grabbing the boys wrist. Stop! The boy met his gaze, unflinching. Why? Are you afraid your names still hidden in there? The man turned ashen. The crowd seemed to hold its breath. Then, with one last, resounding CLUNK, the final lock gave way. The camera cut to the mans frightened face. Yet the boy wasnt finished. He slowly pulled the handle toward him.

The safe opened an inch. A rush of chilly air slipped out. People surged forward, craning their necks to see. The man clutched him tighter. Shut it! he demanded. The boy jerked free and swung the door open. Inside, there was no cash. No gems. Only a battered leather dossier, a faded photograph, and a silver pocket watch that ticked loudly in the gloom. The boy took the photograph first. A close-up: the magnate, years younger, standing next to another man with the same blue eyes as the boy. No the man muttered. The boy turned the photo, revealing it to everyone. This is my father, he said softly. A chorus of gasps filled the room. He carefully lifted the leather dossier, bearing the family crest. He always said youd stash the contracts where only someone weighed down by guilt could hear them tick. The man staggered backwards. Security! he shrieked, voice cracking. No one moved. The boy opened the dossier, his eyes flickering over a single page, before he looked up. You took it all he said, voice trembling. even me.The boy held the old watch up to his ear, its incessant ticking echoing through the frozen room. You stole years, he whispered, but you cant buy them back. Slowly, he placed the watch in the magnates shaking hand.

Then he turned to the crowd, voice unwavering. My father built safes to protect what matters most. You only ever used them to hide. The silence pressed heavier than the steel door.

A woman in pearls gently reached out, touching the dossier. We deserve to know, she said to the boy.

He nodded. Carefully, he read the list aloudnames, dates, betrayalsevery secret the tycoon tried to bury with a lock. Murmurs rose, and the faces turned from curiosity to outrage. Security men finally moved, not to seize the boy, but to support himushering him away from the stunned magnate, who stood trapped in his own shadow, clutching the watch that no longer belonged to him.

As the boy slipped through the doors into the night, the last thing he heard was the crowd awakening, their voices risingnot with laughter, but with truth. For the first time, the safe was truly open.

And far above, from the old balcony, the citys lights winked approvingly, as if somewhere, a father was watching, and time had finally been set right.
