The Elderly Gentleman Who Always Chose Booth Number Seven

The old chap always sat in Booth Seven.
Same café.
Same black coffee.
Same quiet gaze out the window, week after week.
The waitresses called him Mr. Bennetta white-haired gent with a neatly trimmed beard, a weathered oak walking stick, and that kind of stillness that makes everyone around him talk in a lower voice without even realising why.
He never caused a fuss.
He never lingered.
Like clockwork, he always arrived by himself every Tuesday at midday.
That was the day the bikers showed up.
There were six of them, boisterous enough to turn the snug café into their own private circus. Leather jackets, heavy boots that thudded on the floorboards, roaring laughter, and egos even bigger than their bikes. Their leader, a great bear of a man named Jack, clocked Mr. Bennett before he even found a seat.
Its funny, isnt it? Something about real quiet self-respect really rubs raucous blokes up the wrong way.
Jack swaggered over, cocky grin plastered on his face, and slapped the edge of Booth Seven.
Oy, would you look at that? he jeered. A king in a greasy spoon.
Mr. Bennett didnt even flinch.
That just made the others howl and snigger even louder.
Then Jack snatched up Mr. Bennetts walking stick, right out of his hand.
The table lurched. A glass of water went flying and smashed onto the floor. The café erupted with rough laughter as Jack sauntered down the aisle brandishing the walking stick like some kind of prize.
Watch it! one biker called out. Hell be crawling home without that!
And still, Mr. Bennett just sat there.
Didnt shout.
Didnt plead.
Didnt even look at Jack straight away.
He just glanced at the walking stick left on the tiles after Jack tossed it aside.
Then he looked at the spilled water.
And thenvery deliberatelyat the badge stitched inside Jacks jacket: a mottled old silver falcon.
Something changed on Mr. Bennetts face.
Not muchjust a whisper of difference.
He reached into his coat and took out a small black car key fob.
Jack scoffed at him, like he couldnt believe his luck.
What you gonna do with that, grandad? Honk me to death?
Mr. Bennett pressed a button.
A quiet click.
Then he held the fob to his ear, as if this was nothing out of the ordinary for him.
Its me, he said, calm as you like.
The laughter began to fade away.
A little gap.
Bring them in.
He lowered the fob.
Jack held his grin, but it was losing its confidence.
Suddenly, tyres screeched outside.
Heads swung round.
Then another set.
And another.
Three black Range Rovers tore into the car park, headlights glaring straight through the café windows.
The room went utterly silent.
Bit by bit, the bikers bravado started to drain away.
Doors thudded open.
Men in sharp, dark suits spilled out like a tide.
Mr. Bennett finally raised his eyes to Jack.
No trace of humiliation in him nowjust icy resolve.
Jack tried for another laugh, but it came out weak.
Whats this all about?
Mr. Bennetts gaze dropped again to the battered old silver falcon badge.
When he spoke, his voice was so chillingly calm that every last person in the café felt it in their bones.
If that patch came from the man I think it did
He looked Jack dead in the eye.
then youve just nicked your grandfathers walking stick.
Jack went white as a sheet.
Not nervous.
Not put out.
White.
Like something buried deep in his chest had just woken up.
The other bikers looked at Jack.
Then Mr. Bennett.
Then back again at Jack.
Grandfather?
No one was laughing now.
Even the bloke behind the counter stopped clattering dishes.
Jack swallowed, his voice cracking.
Thats not possible.
But it was; you could tell he recognised it. He couldnt deny the falcon badgehis mum had sewn it into his jacket the very day he turned eighteen.
And before shed done it, she only said one thing:
If you ever meet the man who wore this first, stand up straight.
Hed never thought much of it before.
Not until now.
Outside
Range Rover doors slammed.
Firm footsteps neared.
The café door edged open
Six men in those dark, tailored suits slid in without a word.
Not bodyguards.
Not police.
More like old soldiers.
They all paused when they spotted Mr. Bennettand gave him a single nod.
Real respect.
Jacks bravado finally broke.
He looked at Mr. Bennett anewfinally *saw* him.
The little scar on his jaw.
That disciplined, old military posture.
Those sharp, measuring eyes.
Mr. Bennett quietly reached for his coffee.
Took a measured sip.
Then put the cup down with steady hands.
Your mums name?
Jacks throat bobbed.
Emily.
Mr. Bennett closed his eyes, his breath catching, just a moment.
When he opened them again, there was real pain there, you could see it.
Red hair?
Jack nodded.
Left-handed?
Another nod.
Mr. Bennett breathed out as if letting go of something hed carried for decades.
He slid a worn-out photo from his jacket pocket and pushed it across the table.
Jack stared.
In the faded picturea young woman with brilliant red hair was standing between two men in uniform.
On one side, Mr. Bennett.
On the othera man who looked just like Jack, only older and broader, with the very same silver falcon badge.
Jack was shaking.
Thats
My son, Mr. Bennett said quietly.
Silence.
Heavier than before.
Jack lifted his head, hands trembling.
My dad died before I was born.
Mr. Bennett nodded.
Thats what they told your mum.
The air seemed to pull in tight.
Jack stared.
What do you mean, told her?
Mr. Bennett sat back, his eyes steely now.
Your father didnt die.
The room seemed to press in on itself, nobody daring to move.
Jack could barely breathe.
So where is he?
Mr. Bennett glanced out the window, out towards the Range Rovers and the men whod walked in without hesitation.
Hes why those men still answer when I call.
Jacks heart was hammering.
Mr. Bennett pressed the fob again.
One more car pulled up, this one slower, heavier.
Its headlights swept the windows, engine idling low.
And when the door finally swung open
A tall man stepped out
greying at the temples
wearing the silver falcon
and with the same piercing blue eyes as Jack.
